The film takes the boy's faith seriously and addresses discrimination directly; how the town treats the Japanese character is its hardest material. But the tone stays fable-like throughout, and the two lines do not always sit together. Alejandro Monteverde directed. Emily Watson and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa are in the cast. A real warning: the film brings the bombing of Hiroshima into its narrative and places it beside the boy's wish. Many critics attacked that choice severely. Watch it knowing this.
