What Little Wing Is About
Varpu is twelve and growing up fast; her mother does not want to grow up at all. She lives with her mother and has never met her father. One night, fed up with the riding stable crowd and with her mother, she steals a car and drives north to look for the father whose name is all she has. He is not what she expected. Selma Vilhunen's 2016 Finnish film treats that meeting not as a resolution but as a starting point for both mother and daughter. Linnea Skog, who plays Varpu, carries the whole weight of it. The film does not make the child prematurely wise; it only shows that nobody is helping her.
