Look at Me: XXXTENTACION

Sabaah Folayan's 2022 documentary covers how Jahseh Onfroy, growing up in Florida, became one of the most streamed artists in the world through SoundCloud. Onfroy was killed in 2018, at twenty. The problem the documentary faces is plain: the same person was both a musician who reached an enormous audience and someone facing serious charges of violence against a former partner. The film tries to hold both facts together and does not conceal the accusations; Geneva Ayala appears on camera and describes what happened to her. Against that, the documentary was produced with the participation of the family and the record label, which leaves the impression that the account softens in places. The archive is rich, with home recordings and studio footage not previously released. Who it's for: those interested in the contemporary rap scene and portraits of contested figures. Who it's not for: viewers who want to avoid accounts of domestic violence; the film relays them in detail.
