What Lost in America Is About
When David, an advertising man in Los Angeles, does not get the promotion he expected, he quits, talks his wife into it too, and they sell everything and set off in a motorhome to discover America, just like Easy Rider, except the savings they call the nest egg will stay safe. Then his wife loses all of it in one night in Las Vegas. Albert Brooks wrote it, directed it and stars; his target is not the journey but how carefully budgeted the middle-class fantasy of freedom actually is. The conversation with the casino manager is the most famous scene. It is short and merciless, nobody learns anything, and that is the point. Who it is for: viewers who like eighties American satire and Albert Brooks. Who it is not for: anyone wanting sympathetic characters, since both are insufferable throughout.
