What Lou Andreas-Salomé, The Audacity to be Free Is About
An older Lou Andreas-Salomé tells her life to Ernst Pfeiffer, a young scholar. She was born in Petersburg, refused the life a woman was expected to lead, and studied philosophy in Zurich. She wrote novels, poems and essays, and the relationships she formed with Nietzsche, Paul Rée and Rilke both fascinated the Europe of the day and buried her in gossip. Later she joined Freud's circle and worked as a psychoanalyst. Cordula Kablitz-Post's first feature rests on private archives in Göttingen. The film gives the life in flashbacks and tries to show Salomé not as somebody else's muse but as a writer with work of her own. Katharina Lorenz plays her in middle age. Some sources call her the first woman psychoanalyst; that is not correct, as there were women working in Freud's circle before her.
