What Love, Plastic and Noise Is About
Renata Pinheiro's 2013 Brazilian film follows Shelly, who wants to be a singer on the brega scene, following the path of Jaqueline, whom she admires. The film shows the economics of that scene. Stage clothes, dancing and visibility are all sellable; the narrative follows what Shelly has to leave behind as she rises, and saves no one. The images are bright and built on artificial light. The music runs inside the narrative. The tone is harsh and mocking. Who it's for: viewers of Brazilian cinema and stories about the music industry. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a story of ascent; the film tells the opposite.
