What Lupin the Third: Italian Game Is About
Arsène Lupin III learns that a former lover has been kidnapped in Italy and goes after her. He is quickly inside a game where it is not clear who is playing for what: the opponent stays out of sight, the rules keep changing, and everyone across Italy is hiding something. Directed by Kazuhide Tomonaga, this television film sits in the same world as the Italy-set Lupin series broadcast around the same time. Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko and Inspector Zenigata are all in place, and the formula is familiar: the heist, the escape, the betrayal and the real plan that surfaces at the last moment. The series has been running for more than fifty years, and the drawing here deliberately leans towards the classic look. An easy episode for anyone who has been following it a long while.
