What Maciste in Hell Is About

The devil takes Maciste, the strongman hero of the people, down to hell in order to tempt and ruin him. Below there are trials of power, of lust, of transformation, and past a certain point even Maciste’s own body slips out of his control. Guido Brignone turns Dante’s vision of hell into an enormous spectacle using everything silent cinema could do. Bartolomeo Pagano, one of the first stars Italian cinema produced, takes the part again. Held up by the censors and not released in Italy until 1926, it is remembered as one of the films that pulled the young Federico Fellini toward the movies.
