What Madame Bovary Is About

In nineteenth century France, Emma Bovary, a country doctor’s wife, looks for a way out of her dull life in affairs and in spending she cannot stop, and the end of it is heavy. Jean Renoir tried to film Flaubert’s novel in the light of the provinces themselves, without decoration, with Valentine Tessier as Emma. His first cut ran three and a half hours; the producer brought it down to a hundred minutes and Renoir’s own version never resurfaced. Even what is left describes the airlessness of provincial life and the price of wanting out.
