What Magic Trip: Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place Is About
The summer of 1964. Ken Kesey, the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, boards a painted bus and sets off from California for New York. With him is a group calling themselves the Merry Pranksters; at the wheel is Neal Cassady, known from Kerouac's book. They film everything along the way. The group meant to make a film out of that footage and never finished it; a hundred hours of material sat for years. Alison Ellwood and Alex Gibney directed the documentary together, pulling that material into order and matching it to the sound. The telling neither exalts the period nor judges it, and shows the point at which the group begins to come apart.
