April Carrión What Mala Mala Is About
Dan Sickles and Antonio Santini’s documentary spent more than two years with the trans community and drag scene of Puerto Rico. Its subjects are advocates, business owners, sex workers and a loud drag collective who call themselves The Doll House. The film holds the personal and the political sides of acceptance at once: what happens in the mirror and what happens on the street are given the same weight. Running through it is an actual piece of legislation, a bill banning employment discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, and the organisation the community builds around it. It played in the world documentary competition at Tribeca.
