What Malcolm X Is About
The documentary gives the life of the murdered Black leader Malcolm X through archive footage, recordings of his speeches and newsreels, with James Earl Jones narrating. It puts his own words at the centre and does not place a commentator between him and the viewer. Muhammad Ali appears on screen as well. Setting the speeches one after another also makes visible how his thinking changed across the years, and the film does not try to tidy that into a single line. That it was made only a few years after his death gives the account a particular weight; what it covers had not yet become history, and the film does not conceal that. Arnold Perl’s ninety one minute American documentary was completed in 1972.
