What Man spricht deutsh Is About
A middle class Bavarian family spends the last day of its holiday in a coastal town south of Rome. The whole film fits into that one day: deckchairs, daydreaming, adding up costs, and racist remarks about Italians muttered under the breath. Gerhard Polt and Gisela Schneeberger play the parents. It is satire, and what the film finds ridiculous is not Italians but this family and the settled cliché of the German tourist. Polt comes out of the Bavarian cabaret tradition and leaves his character exactly as he is, without defending or explaining him. Hanns Christian Müller directed. The misspelling in the title is deliberate.
