What Manda Bala (Send a Bullet) Is About
The documentary treats corruption and kidnapping for ransom in Brazil as two ends of the same cycle, and it opens on a frog farm being used to launder money. Jason Kohn shot it in Sao Paulo and spoke separately to kidnappers, to people who had been kidnapped, to politicians, to police and to those who profit from the arrangement. In a city where bulletproof cars, abductions and reconstructive plastic surgery have all become ordinary, the country’s enormous gap between rich and poor turns up underneath every story. The eighty-five minute film came out in 2007 and was blocked from release in Brazil. The title is Portuguese for send a bullet, and the stories Kohn gathers start in different places and arrive at the same one.
