Manny & Lo

Lo is sixteen and pregnant; her sister Manny is eleven. Both have run from foster homes and are driving around in a stolen car. Lo knows nothing about the pregnancy and has nobody to go to. They watch Elaine, who works in a baby shop and seems to know everything about babies. They take her, drive her to an empty holiday house, and tie her ankle. Elaine is terrified at first, and then understands that these two children genuinely have no one. Lisa Krueger directs; eighty-eight minutes. Manny is played by the eleven-year-old Scarlett Johansson, one of her first substantial parts, with Mary Kay Place as Elaine and Aleksa Palladino as Lo. It screened at Sundance.
