What Maria Chapdelaine Is About

In 1910, on the banks of the Péribonka north of Lake Saint-Jean, a family works every year to push the forest back a little further. Maria, seventeen, has three roads in front of her: François, who lives out in the woods, Eutrope, the neighbouring farmer, and Lorenzo, who offers a life in the United States. Louis Hémon’s novel of 1913 had been filmed several times before, and Sébastien Pilote’s adaptation, running well over two and a half hours, is generally held to be the most faithful of them. It refuses to hurry the decision, making the turn of the seasons and plain exhaustion part of the story. Sara Montpetit won Quebec cinema’s revelation of the year for the part.
