Marie-France Marcotte M Marie Jasmina What The Fireflies Are Gone Is About
The sleepy town where Leo lives offers her little chance of making anything of herself. Getting out from under her mother’s influence and the surroundings that press on her is not easy for the angry young woman; even so, happiness may be nearer than she thinks. The film tells a young person’s effort to find out who she is, and does it without reaching for large events, through everyday conversation and long scenes. The tone of the account is sharp and wry, taking neither the town nor the girl too seriously. The town itself is a character in the account; the streets and the empty hours carry the girl’s condition. Karelle Tremblay plays the lead in Sebastien Pilote’s ninety six minute Canadian film, completed in 2018.
