What Marriage of the Blessed Is About
Haji, a young photographer returned from the Iran-Iraq War with the effects of blast waves, leaves hospital, and the doctors advise him to marry in order to recover. His fiancée Mehri stands by him, but her father, a businessman, wants to marry her to a wealthy man. Haji goes back to his old job at a newspaper; the two of them photograph poverty, homelessness and addiction in the streets of Tehran. The editor will not print the pictures. What the film is really about is that the war has not ended, and that what happened at the front and what is happening in the country cannot be told at the same time. Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s seventy five minute Iranian film caused argument on release; it was completed in 1989.
