What Martin Margiela: In His Own Words Is About
Reiner Holzemer's 2020 documentary is about the fashion designer Martin Margiela. Throughout his career Margiela gave no interviews, was never photographed and did not take a bow at the end of shows; in 2008 he left his own house and withdrew entirely. The documentary does not break that anonymity. Margiela speaks but only his voice is heard; all that appears on screen are his hands, his drawings and pieces from his archive. That choice sets the film's form. The narrative focuses on the design itself; shows with covered faces, garments without labels and reused materials are each shown. His reason for leaving is also stated directly and has to do with the pace of the industry. Who it's for: those interested in fashion history and design processes. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a personal portrait; the film never enters its subject's private life.
