Masked Avengers

A masked gang in one district is abducting and killing people; they work with three-pronged spears and nobody has seen their faces. There is one former member of the gang: the man repented, left, and has now sworn to destroy them. At around the same time a group of martial brothers arrives in the town to catch the killers. But not everyone among them is what he appears, and one of them is not to be trusted. Directed by Chang Cheh, the film is one of the Shaw Brothers studio's later works and was made with the troupe known as the Venoms; Phillip Kwok, Chiang Sheng and Lu Feng were the fixed names in that group. The mould is revenge wuxia but the tone is darker: masks, traps and scenes of torture push the film towards horror. Ninety-two minutes. The fights are built entirely on the set and rest on acrobatics.
