Adapted from the 1860 novel by Eduard Douwes Dekker, who wrote as Multatuli, the film follows an idealistic Dutch colonial official posted to the East Indies in the nineteenth century. Havelaar believes he can genuinely improve the lives of the people he is responsible for, and learns soon enough how thoroughly the system has institutionalised the extraction and how little his own position is worth. Fons Rademakers released it on 9 September 1976, and in Indonesia it ran for only a few days before the New Order government banned it; on 1 April 1977 the censorship board said it would be allowed only with changes, and it was not shown in the country until 1987. The story of Saijah and Adinda is the passage inside it that everyone remembers.
