What Mayor of the Sunset Strip Is About
Rodney Bingenheimer was a radio presenter in Los Angeles, one of those names that barely appears in the history of music and without whom that history could not have been assembled. On his KROQ show he was the first person in America to play countless bands, from the Sex Pistols and Blondie to Nirvana, Oasis and Coldplay. He envied nobody, asked nothing of anybody, and simply loved the music. George Hickenlooper's documentary shows the crowd of famous people around this man while really describing his loneliness. Everybody knows him, nobody calls him. The film is about what fame is and what standing next to it does to a person. The telling neither elevates Bingenheimer nor asks for pity for him. Hickenlooper was already known for his documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now.
