The documentary lets John McEnroe give his own account of his career and his temper. The eruptions on court, the fights with umpires, the matches against Björn Borg and the titles won all come in turn. But the real subject is not success; McEnroe talks about why winning never settled anything for him and what he was fighting inside himself. Barney Douglas's documentary uses footage of McEnroe walking through an empty New York at night as its spine. His wife Patty Smyth and his children speak too. The film neither clears him nor leaves him as the bad boy and nothing else; it also asks who paid for the way he behaved. There is plenty of archive match footage.
