Around Zuriko, a schoolboy in a Georgian village, the life of the village itself runs on through the years before the war, the war and the years after it. Beside the boy are his grandmother, who had never been to school and now starts alongside him, one eyed Iliko and the short sighted hunter Ilarion, and death and poverty are threaded through the jokes the three of them make. Tengiz Abuladze’s ninety minute black and white Georgian film was adapted from Nodar Dumbadze’s first novel, the two of them writing the screenplay together. Sergo Orjonikidze, Sesilia Takaishvili and Aleqsandre Jorjoliani appear. It was completed in 1962 and carries the first signs of the maturity the director would reach years later with Repentance.
