Michael Glawogger takes his camera to the outer edges of four great cities: Mumbai, Mexico City, Moscow and New York. Across twelve separate chapters the documentary follows people who have built their daily lives at the margin there: a man carrying a cinema around the streets, a vendor selling chicken feet, a worker dyeing cloth, someone collecting waste, children living on the street, a woman driving a crane. Glawogger deliberately breaks most of the rules of documentary; some sequences are plainly staged, and the film is trying to build a visual poetry rather than to transmit reality. That earned it both admiration and argument. It was named best documentary in São Paulo in 1998 and was also awarded in San Francisco. In ninety minutes it shows poverty as handiwork rather than as a statistic.
