Melchior the Apothecary: The Ghost

In the middle of the night a drunk town guard meets the daughter of a rich merchant. She took her own life ten years ago. Soon after, the guard falls dead from the tower. Two more suspicious deaths follow. Melchior the apothecary doubts that any ghost exists; he thinks these deaths are not accidents but a crime that has been arranged. As he tracks the killer he runs into people accused of heresy, old feuds and family secrets. The film sets a historical town inside the shape of a crime story. The clash between superstition and investigation is the real subject. Märten Metsaviir takes the lead, with Maarja Johanna Mägi also in the cast. Elmo Nüganen’s ninety minute film, a joint Estonian, German, Latvian and Lithuanian production, was completed in 2022.
