What Names in Marble Is About
Despite the talk of peace, the Soviet Russian army moves into Estonia and the government declares a general mobilisation. Henn Ahas, the son of a poor family, hesitates about going to war, and the film treats that hesitation not as a failing but as what an eighteen-year-old actually feels. Elmo Nüganen adapted it from Albert Kivikas’s 1936 novel, one of the central works of Estonian literature about the War of Independence of 1918 to 1920. It was the most expensive Estonian film made up to that point and became the country’s biggest box-office success as well.
