What Hello My Dear Is About
Ulaş Tosun's 2021 Turkish documentary is about the poet Arkadaş Z. Özger. It takes its name from a poem of his that caused argument when it appeared. The documentary looks into why the poem unsettled people. Özger's view of sexuality and social convention found no home even in the left circles of the period; the narrative builds this from the accounts of those who knew him. Özger died young and his poems stayed out of circulation for a long time. Interviews and archive are used together. The tone is calm. Who it's for: those interested in Turkish poetry and literary history. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a full biography; the documentary turns around a single text.
