What Merrill's Marauders Is About
Burma, 1944. The unit of three thousand volunteers under Brigadier General Frank Merrill marches behind the Japanese lines toward Myitkyina. There is fighting at every strongpoint, and between them malaria, dysentery and exhaustion; the unit is pushed past its limit again and again. It is drawn from a real campaign. Samuel Fuller builds the film out of fatigue rather than heroism; Fuller had been an infantryman in the Second World War himself, and it shows in his films. Jeff Chandler plays Merrill, in what became his last role: he died before the film was released.
