Milly & Mamet

Ernest Prakasa's 2018 Indonesian film follows the married life of Milly, who gave up her career after the wedding, and Mamet, who wants to become a chef. She is shut in at home with the care of a child; he wants to follow his own dream, and both of their claims are in conflict. What makes it interesting is treating domestic labour as a direct subject rather than a background: the question of who is sacrificing sits at the centre and the answer is not one-sided. Prakasa's humour comes from everyday detail. The story is built as a spin-off from a popular film series, and some references stay closed to anyone who does not know it. The resolution comes a little easily. Who it's for: viewers who like Indonesian comedy and family stories built on marriage. Who it's not for: anyone new to the series, or expecting sharp social criticism.
