What Minamata: The Victims and Their World Is About
The documentary is about the mercury poisoning in the Japanese town of Minamata. The fertiliser factory built in the town released waste water containing mercury into the sea; the sea was poisoned, people who lived on fish fell ill, a great many died and far more had to live with permanent damage. The director spent months listening to the patients and their families. In the last part of the film the patients and their supporters buy shares in the company, get into the annual general meeting and come face to face with the directors. This is the first of a long series of documentaries the director made about Minamata. The film stands on the side of the patients and listens at length to what they have to say. Noriaki Tsuchimoto’s Japanese documentary was completed in 1971.
