Mine

Atıf Yılmaz's 1982 film follows Mine, married to a stationmaster in a small town. The men of the town watch her and the women keep their distance. The balance breaks when İlhan, her friend's brother, arrives. The film is not about love but about the watch the town keeps on a woman; the narrative follows what others think far more than what Mine does. Türkan Şoray leads, in a role that stands apart in her career. It belongs to the period when Yılmaz put women at the centre of his films. The close is left open. Who it's for: viewers of Turkish cinema of the eighties and of women's narratives. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a fast narrative; the film is quiet and slow.
