What Miracle of the White Stallions Is About
In the last year of the war, Alois Podhajsky, director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, tries to save the Lipizzaner stallions from bombing and from being seized, and to make sure they end up in the right hands. That is where the American general Patton comes in, though he first wants to see the horses work. Arthur Hiller directed the Disney production, taken from Podhajsky’s own book about events that really happened. Robert Taylor plays Podhajsky and Lilli Palmer his wife. The film tells the war not from the front but through one institution’s attempt to survive being in the middle of it.
