What Mister Max Is About
Gianni sells newspapers in Rome and has very little money. On holiday he invents himself as Count Max Varaldo, and on a cruise out of Naples he meets Donna Paola, wealthy and snobbish, along with her shy maid Lauretta. Realising nothing will come of Paola, he decides to drop the Max identity and propose to Lauretta, who by now firmly believes he is a count, and the misunderstandings start from there. Mario Camerini made it in 1937 with Vittorio De Sica in the lead, from the acting years well before he took up directing himself.
