What Montenegro Is About
Dušan Makavejev's 1981 black comedy, shot in Sweden, follows Marilyn Jordan, an American housewife living in Stockholm. Her husband is wealthy, the house is in order and her days are empty. Her behaviour keeps straining the frame the house puts around her, and after being held at airport customs one day she drifts into the circle around the Zanzi Bar, run by Yugoslav immigrants. Whether what she finds there is freedom or another trap is a question the film refuses to settle. Makavejev looks at the bourgeois home and the bohemian bar with the same sardonic eye and idealises neither. Susan Anspach is at the centre of it, with Erland Josephson as the husband, and the humour is as uncomfortable as the ending.
