What Innocence Unprotected Is About
In 1942, in German-occupied Belgrade, an acrobat made his own film: the first Serbian sound picture. The man who made it, Dragoljub Aleksić, was actor, director and stuntman at once, performing his own feats in it. The film was shown, then disappeared. Years later Makavejev found the footage and built a new film around it. Dušan Makavejev hand-tints scenes from the old film and cuts them together with interviews with the surviving cast and with wartime archive. What comes out is both documentary and commentary: what it was to make a film under occupation, and what happened to these people afterwards. The film won a jury prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 1968. Aleksić speaks in it himself.
