What More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story Is About
Most people know Pat Morita as Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. The documentary covers how he got there. As a child he spent years confined to a bed with spinal tuberculosis; when he could finally walk, he and his family were sent straight to a Japanese American internment camp. After that came stand-up, the clubs, television, and finally the part of Miyagi, which brought him an Oscar nomination. Behind all of it ran something that never let up: drink, drugs, and never thinking himself enough. Kayvon Derak Shanian directs; ninety minutes. Morita's own recordings form the spine of the narration. Ralph Macchio, William Zabka and Martin Kove also speak.
