What Mortified Nation Is About
The documentary follows the stage shows called Mortified that are held in various American cities. At the show adults go up on stage and read out to a hall of complete strangers the diaries they kept as teenagers, the poems they wrote, the love letters and the drawings they made. What comes of it is as much relief as shame; once it is seen that everyone went through the same awkwardness, the hall begins less to laugh than to recognise. The film asks why the show has caught on so widely and what that says about all of us. Michael Mayer’s eighty five minute American documentary gives the stage recordings together with what the participants have to say; it was completed in 2013.
