What Moss Rose Is About
A music-hall dancer is murdered, and a moss rose marks the page of the Bible lying beside her body. Another chorus girl who saw a gentleman leaving the building that night goes straight to him. What she wants is not money: two weeks at his country estate, living as a lady. Gregory Ratoff’s film, set in Victorian London, is adapted from Marjorie Bowen’s novel of 1934, which drew in turn on a real murder case. Peggy Cummins plays the chorus girl, Victor Mature the gentleman and Ethel Barrymore his mother. What is interesting is the object of the blackmail: she asks not for money but for a few weeks inside another class, and that request unsettles the household more than the murder does.
