What Adam Had Four Sons Is About
Emilie is hired to look after the four sons of the wealthy Adam Stoddard and his wife Molly. When Molly dies, both the father and the boys come to depend on her, and Emilie falls in love with Adam. The family fortune is wiped out in a market crash, yet after the boys are grown Adam insists that Emilie stay on as part of the household. When one of the sons marries a calculating woman named Hester, Emilie’s relations with both the boys and Adam are strained. Gregory Ratoff’s Columbia production was adapted from Charles Bonner’s 1940 novel Legacy and opened on 18 February 1941. Ingrid Bergman plays Emilie, in one of her first American films, and Susan Hayward plays Hester; neither was yet a major star. The record’s summary ends with a writer credit that has leaked in from IMDb.
