What Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown Is About
James Brown was left by his parents as a small child, raised by a relative, and built his music himself. The documentary starts with his first hit, Please, Please, Please, in 1956, and traces how he arrived at funk: pulling the accent onto the first beat, taking the song off the melody and hanging the whole thing on the drums. There is stage footage from the Apollo Theater, the T.A.M.I. Show, the Paris Olympia. And there is the side of Brown that is not the music: his relation to the civil rights movement and the way he ran his band. Alex Gibney directs; a hundred and fifteen minutes, with Mick Jagger among the producers. Those talking include Bootsy Collins, Bobby Byrd, Chuck D and Questlove; the first two played in Brown's band.
