What Mumbai Mafia: Police vs the Underworld Is About
The documentary is about the criminal organisation that held unchecked power over Mumbai in the 1990s and about the police unit that rose against it. The organisation, said to have employed close to twenty five thousand people, worked across smuggling, gambling, drugs and extortion; the state answered with a method known as encounter policing, in which targets were killed rather than brought before a court. The film speaks to those officers, to people from inside the organisation and to the journalists who covered it, and asks openly where that method stands in relation to the law. The eighty eight minute production by Raaghav Dar and Francis Longhurst was released on 6 January 2023.
