What My Best Pals Is About
Known in French as Mes meilleurs copains, My Best Pals is director Jean-Marie Poiré's comedy, released March 1, 1989, following five friends whose idealism from May 1968, the hippie years, and a shared rock band reunites for a weekend fifteen years later when Bernadette, the group's former lead singer turned rock star, comes back. Poiré himself had been a rock singer in his youth under the name "Martin Dune," and part of the film draws on his own memories. The cast includes Gérard Lanvin, Christian Clavier, and Jean-Pierre Bacri. Who it's for: anyone curious about a French comedy that channels the director's own youth into the nostalgia and fading idealism of the May 1968 generation. Who it's not for: viewers with no familiarity with the era's politics and music culture, since the film's references assume that context.
