My Brothers Dream Awake

Claudia Huaiquimilla's 2021 Chilean film follows two brothers held for a year in a juvenile detention centre. Ángel and Franco struggle to remember the outside. Despite the harshness of the institution, bonds form inside. The film does not define the young men by their offences; the narrative shows their hopes for the future and how narrow the space left for them is, and the close comes hard. Some of the cast are inexperienced. The images are interior and low-lit. The tone is heavy. Who it's for: viewers of Latin American independent cinema and films critical of institutions. Who it's not for: viewers for whom events leading to the deaths of young people would be difficult.
