What My Country, My Country Is About
Laura Poitras films the run-up to the January 2005 elections in Iraq by staying with Riyadh al-Adhadh, a Sunni doctor and father of six who is also standing as a candidate. He treats his patients, campaigns, and relearns every day what it means to hold an election in an occupied country. The film advances without propaganda and without announcing its conclusions in advance, and that is where its strength comes from. Poitras was nominated for an Academy Award for it. Afterwards she was stopped at the US border for years, had her devices seized, and learned she had been placed in the highest threat category despite never being charged; she sued the government in 2015.
