What The Oath Is About
Two men meet in Yemen in 1996. Salim Hamdan became Osama bin Laden's driver, Abu Jandal his bodyguard. Hamdan was later held for years at Guantanamo and his case went as far as the US Supreme Court, whose ruling changed the legal basis of the military commissions. Abu Jandal is free in Yemen, driving a taxi and talking. Laura Poitras runs the two stories in parallel. She absolves nobody and reduces nobody to a single word; Abu Jandal's own contradictions and Hamdan's years of detention without trial sit in the same film. The production is the second part of Poitras' post-9/11 trilogy. It won the documentary cinematography award at Sundance in 2010.
