What My Girl and I Is About
Su-ho is an ordinary high school student living with his widowed mother in a seaside town. One day he is close to drowning in the sea and somebody pulls him out, but he does not see who. Su-eun, from the same school, is the girl everyone notices, and for some reason she is looking at him. After a while Su-eun tells him it was she who saved him, and something starts between them. The film is the Korean adaptation of Crying Out Love in the Centre of the World, a big hit in Japan in 2004; the source is Kyoichi Katayama's novel. The version directed by Jeon Yun-su carries the story to the Korean coast and does not change the mould: first love, illness, and a return years later. Song Hye-kyo and Cha Tae-hyun play the couple. The narrative openly sets out to make you cry and does not hide it; it is a typical example of that strand of Korean melodrama.
