What Le Grand Chef Is About

At a press conference the knife of the last royal chef of the Joseon dynasty is shown to the public; that cook had refused to prepare food for the Japanese administration and had cut off his own hand with it. A nationwide cooking competition is set up to determine who should inherit the knife. A young man who was once an exceptionally gifted chef, who left the profession after a contest ended in disaster and withdrew to the countryside to farm with his grandfather and sell vegetables at the market, sees in the contest a chance to clear his name, and gathers an unlikely team. Jeon Yun-su directed, adapting the widely read comic Sikgaek by Huh Young-man. Kim Kang-woo and Lee Ha-na lead. The film’s interest is not only in food but in treating Korean cooking as a carrier of memory.
