What Sugar and Stars Is About
Known in French as À la belle étoile, Sugar and Stars is director Sébastien Tulard's first feature and is based on the real story of Yazid Ichemrahen, who grew up in foster care and group homes before pursuing pastry work with top chefs and eventually competing for the 2014 World Frozen Dessert Championship. The lead is played by Just Riadh, an influencer with little prior film experience, a casting choice that gives the film a rawer, less polished texture than a typical rags to riches drama. It balances its underdog arc with a pointed look at the gaps in the foster care system. Who it's for: anyone drawn to true story career dramas and to what foster care actually looks like from the inside. Who it's not for: viewers expecting seasoned lead performances, since Just Riadh's inexperience shows through in places.
