My Skinny Sister

Stella is twelve and worships her older sister Katja, a figure skater. Katja is beautiful, disciplined, the one everyone praises. Then Stella notices something: her sister is not eating, is secretly bringing up what she does eat, and asks her not to tell anyone. Stella tries to carry the secret. As it grows, the balance of the household breaks and Stella loses all attention. Sanna Lenken tells an eating disorder not from the person who has it but from her sibling. That choice moves the center of the story: the matter is as much Stella becoming invisible in the process as it is whether Katja recovers. The film does not let go of the ordinary difficulties of adolescence either. Rebecka Josephson plays Stella and Amy Deasismont plays Katja. Who it's for: Viewers who like Scandinavian family drama, sibling narratives, and stories built from a child's vantage. Who it's not for: The scenes of disordered eating are direct and uncomfortable. The film also offers no resolution; recovery stays outside it.
